Osborne Hires former Kell coach Derek Cook

Osborne has named former Kell and South Cobb head coach Derek Cook as the Cardinals’ 24th head coach in program history.

Cook makes his return to coaching after spending time away from the field as an administrator. His most recent head coaching job was at fellow Cobb County school Kell, where he served as head coach from 2008 to 2015 and amassed an 89-23 record. During his tenure, Cook led the Longhorns to region championships in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 and made the quarterfinals or better in 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2016.

Cook is taking over an Osborne program coming off its best season in decades. In 2023, the Cardinals went 7-4 and made the playoffs for the first time. He replaces Luqman Salam, who left the program after three seasons to become the head coach at Harrison. Cook aims to continue the upward trend the Cardinals have experienced over the past few years, going from winning only three games between 2016 and 2021 to winning 12 games over the previous two seasons under Coach Luqman.

Development has been one of Cook’s main focuses, with him sending over 100 players into the college ranks during his nine seasons with Kell. The Cardinals are returning three players who made the 5-7A All-Region team in 2023, most notably defensive back Ian Williams, who already has six FBS offers heading into his senior season.
