PANTHERS PROWL: Alumni fares well in Peachtree Road Race

With former GSU Dean of Men Tim Singleton’s recent induction into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, it’s only fitting that some modern-day Panthers showed well in this year’s Peachtree Road Race. Singleton is credited as the founder of the annual July 4 race back in 1970 with the help of many GSU volunteers. Former GSU runner Zaven O’Bryant placed 75th among the men (83rd overall) with a time of 33:17. Current cross country runner Katharine Showalter was the 30th fastest female runner and 289th overall finisher with a time of 38:09. Current women’s cross country coach Lauren Blankenship was the 139th fastest female finisher as she clocked in at 44:03.

Freshman hurdler Tamara Moore was named Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Track & Field Rookie of the Year, and head coach Eric Campbell was honored as the CAA Coach of the Year. Moore is GSU’s fourth CAA Rookie of the Year in 2010-11, joining Jewel Evans (women’s soccer), Abigail Tere-Apisah (women’s tennis) and Kaitlyn Medlam (softball).

According to reports in the AJC, Panther football has received three commitments for 2012 including two

linebackers in the Panthers’ continued effort to beef up defensively. LB Joseph Peterson and offensive

lineman Aaron Thomas will be coming from Dothan High School in Alabama along with their defensive

coordinator Eldrick Hill, who will be joining the staff as a graduate assistant or intern. Also committing

was linebacker Bryan Williams of Miramar, Fla. … Meanwhile, most team members are on campus for

summer classes, and they are able to participate in voluntary workouts with new Assistant AD for Speed,

Strength and Conditioning Ben Pollard.

Even though Panther football will not begin CAA play until 2012 it’ll be interesting to follow the league

this season. In the Sporting News college football preseason magazine, the predictions show the favorite

to be William & Mary following the Tribe’s 8-4 (6-2 CAA) season last year. Delaware is the number two

pick with New Hampshire, Richmond and Maine rounding out the Top 5. Old Dominion, which begins

league play this season is predicted to finish 8th. Georgia State will host ODU on Sept. 10 in the

Georgia Dome.
