RECRUITING BUZZ: Offers should soon arrive for Bennifield

The young man led his team to a 14-1 record and a spot in the Class AAAA finals one year ago. He recently was named the “Top Quarterback” at the Atlanta MVP Camp. Several teammates have scholarship offers. But Lovejoy’s Alejandro Bennifield does not have a single offer yet. Last year, Bennifield passed for nearly 1,500 yards and 15 scores as Lovejoy advanced to the Georgia Dome before falling to Tucker in the title game. Bennifield measures out at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and performed well in front of several college coaches at the Atlanta MVP Camp and could soon receive some offers. Earlier this week his teammate Travis Custis committed to Georgia Tech.

February saw five Archer players sign letters of intent to take their football talents to the next level with Georgia Southern’s Jermaine Morris highlighting the list. Next February, many eyes across the southeast will be on Archer’s signing ceremony as defensive end Antonio Riles will put pen to paper. Riles has seven offers already including Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. Riles was in Athens over the weekend and told ESPN.com’s DawgNation “They were recruiting me pretty hard.” Bryan McClendon is serving as the lead recruiter on Riles, and this process will be interesting to follow as Archer has its first major recruit just one year after making the playoffs for the first time in school history.

A current college coach from California with Atlanta Falcons ties managed to secure the commitment of another Georgia player, but this time UCLA’s Jim Mora wasn’t involved. Norcross cornerback Shon Akins liked what he heard from California defensive backs coach Ashley Ambrose and pledged to the Golden Bears without having ever visited the campus. Akins told the Gwinnett Daily Post that he has “a great relationship with Coach Ambrose.” The 5-foot-9 corner will reportedly visit Cal over the summer.

The Columbus baseball team was a bit shorthanded in the recent National High School Invitational as shortstop/pitcher JT Phillips was forced to sit out due to a stress fracture in his back. Phillips has signed with the University of Georgia, but could be drafted in the upcoming MLB draft. Georgia head coach David Perno told ESPN that Phillips is “another big, physical talent and is one of the scariest hitters in the state.” Phillips is ranked as the No. 11 player in the state and the No. 19 shortstop in the country. He could also move to third at the college level according to one recruiting scout. Typical recovery time for a stress fracture in the back ranges from six weeks to three months.
