RECRUITING BUZZ: Shaw, McCoy make commitments

Georgia may not have impressed on the field at last Saturday’s G-Day scrimmage, but it sure looked good off it, as the team picked up commitments from two talented 2010 prospects. Kissimmee, Fla., inside linebacker Marc Deas became Georgia’s second commitment in the 2010 class, selecting the Bulldogs despite receiving offers from Kentucky and UCF. The 6-foot, 185-pound athlete was named First-Team All State last year, recording over 100 tackles in addition to scoring six touchdowns on offense.

Joining Deas and becoming Georgia’s third 2010 commitment was Buford lineman Kolton Houston. The 6-5, 270-pound standout has been highly sought after to say the least, receiving offers from Georgia Tech, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn and Clemson to name a few. Houston can play on either side of the ball, though he believes he is a better fit on offense, which would allow him to team back up with former Buford teammate and current Bulldog freshman Dallas Lee.

Tech has also received good news along the recruiting trail when it recently landed a commitment from Northview defensive tackle Denzel McCoy. A four-star recruit according to Rivals.com, the 6-4, 275-pound McCoy chose Tech over a hoard of other offers, including ones from Auburn, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Alabama. As a junior, McCoy recorded 72 tackles, including 10 for a loss and four sacks.

GATOR PRINTS

Following a year in which they didn’t land a single Georgia recruit, Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators are now starting to make some serious noise along the state’s recruiting trail. Last week, Coffee star Pernell Williams, one of the Southeast’s top defensive backs, announced that he is all but committed to the Gators. What’s stopping Williams then? Meyer asked the 6-2, 180-pound junior to finish taking all of his visits before making a commitment.

Conveniently, the Gators also used Georgia spring break to get some of the state’s top talent to visit Gainesville last Wednesday. Those in attendance included Henry County’s Markeith Ambles, one of the top receivers in the country, Southwest DeKalb teammates T.J. Stripling (DE) and Kendrun Malcome (RB), and North Gwinnett offensive tackle JaWuan James.

Finally, Meyer looked to get a head start on recruiting for 2011 last week as well, becoming the most recent coach to offer Tucker sophomore James Vaughters. The 6-2, 220-pound linebacker, considered by most to be the top sophomore in the state, has also received scholarship promises from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Clemson, Stanford, N.C. State and Central Florida.

LEAVING HOME

Connor Shaw, current Flowery Branch quarterback and brother of Georgia Tech signal caller Jaybo Shaw, decided last week not to follow in his brother’s footsteps, electing instead to play his college ball for Steve Spurrier at the University of South Carolina. In addition to interest in Tech, the younger Shaw also considered offers from Stanford, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Central Florida and East Carolina. As a junior, the 6-2, 195-pound Shaw passed for 2,200 yards and 22 touchdowns while also rushing for 941 yards and 11 scores.
