Series of major events have Atlanta Public Schools geared for a huge 2018

A sequence of three events, and historic “firsts”, await the Atlanta Public School system as the district gets set for the 2018 football season. On Monday, July 23 at 10 a.m., coaches and players from the 11 APS football programs will meet downtown at the College Football Hall of Fame for the first time to discuss the upcoming season at the aptly named APS Football Media Day. Six of the district’s teams reached the playoffs last season, including Class AAAAAA quarterfinalist Mays and Class AAAAA semifinalist Carver-Atlanta.

Then on Saturday, Aug. 18, Mays will face Norcross at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the grand finale of the 2018 MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic as the first-ever APS program to be featured in the 27-year-old event. Mays is led by head coach Niketa Battle, who has produced a 16-0 Region 5-AAAAAA record in his three years at the school, and electric senior quarterback Jahquez Evans who is being recruited not only as a dual threat quarterback, but also a wide receiver, cornerback and safety.

The following Saturday (Aug. 25), Mays will be be back in the spotlight at the first annual Cam Newton Foundation C1N Georgia vs. Alabama Showcase at Lakewood Stadium. Newton’s alma mater Westlake will face Sidney Lanier (AL) and Griffin will take on Clay-Chalkville (AL) before Mays takes on Phenix City (AL) in the event’s third and final game.

Tickets to the Corky Kell are $20 in advance and will be $25 at the gate. Visit corkykell.com  for more information, including previews of each of the 18 teams in this year’s classic.

Tickets for the C1N Georgia vs. Alabama Showcase are $10 and are also available in advance at Mays High School (3450 Benjamin E. Mays Drive, SW).
