Tamburo to Boise; Whigham chooses Ole Miss

Last week was a big one for one of Georgia’s finest signal callers, as North Gwinnett’s Michael Tamburo identified Boise State as his college destination. In the end, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound quarterback chose the Broncos over Bowling Green, Toledo and Tulsa. And, according to Tamburo, making the decision last week was ideal, giving the North Gwinnett star an opportunity to concentrate solely on his team’s quest for a state championship. As for why Boise State was the school of choice, Tamburo had this to say:

“I love the overall football program, the system and the coaches,” he recently explained in an interview with Rivals.com’s Jamie Newberg. “What really won me over was the quarterback coach …The football is all great but outside of that, the school, facilities and everything is awesome. It’s just a beautiful place.”

Interestingly, when most people think of Boise State quarterbacks, explosive passing comes to mind, and while Tamburo can certainly toss the pigskin, his ability to run the football stands out the most, an especially enticing attribute to the coaches of the dynamic Boise State offense. And his senior stats only confirm said scouting report, as Tamburo threw 14 touchdowns through 11 games this year in addition to gaining an impressive 500 yards on the ground while rushing for 10 touchdowns.

WHIGHAM REBELS

When Cameron Whigham decided last week it was time to end his recruitment, two schools in particular, neither in state, could be found waiting on the proverbial edges of their seats: Mississippi and Central Florida. In the end, however, the 6-3, 230-pound Shiloh defensive end felt mostly Rebellious.

“[On Wednesday], I called coach (Tracy) Rocker up and told him that I had committed,” Whigham explained in a recent interview with RebelSports.com. “He was real happy with my decision. I feel comfortable with him. And, Ole Miss is a program that is definitely on the rise. I saw them play Florida and Auburn on TV, and they are a good team. They are really making up for last year.”

And despite the future Rebel’s relative lack of publicity (he is currently unranked according to Rivals.com), on the field, Whigham has certainly played the part of a big-time recruit. As a senior in 2008, he recorded approximately 85 tackles to go along with 12 quarterback hurries and eight sacks. And, when asked, Whigham is certainly quick to explain what he believes to be his best attributes.

“I’d say that one of my key strengths is my ability to rush the passer and my physical play,” he said. “I can also stop the run.”

And it is that same aggressive mentality that Ole Miss fans hope to see on the field next year from their school’s 16th commitment in the class of 2009.

In other Georgia recruiting news, Newnan offensive guard Adam Calhoun also declared his college destination last week, deciding to suit up next year for the Alabama State Hornets. The massive 6-7, 335-pound lineman became the second Newnan offensive lineman to verbally commit somewhere for 2009, as fellow guard Raymond Beno gave his pledge to the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech in late July.
