Walton tennis begins new streak

While the streak is still in its early phases, the Walton girls tennis team has started a new streak after seeing its record-breaking winning streak snapped during last year’s GHSA Class AAAAA playoffs. The Raiders are 10-0 after downing the Roswell Hornets 4-1 last Thursday, the same team that snapped the Raiders’ streak and ended a run of eight straight GHSA state championships. The victory gave Walton a perfect 7-0 mark in Region 5-AAAAAA play with the region tournament set to begin today. Suzanne Zenoni has had a strong run this year at No. 1 singles with senior Melissa Mashburn holding down No. 2 singles. Walton will look to make it 11 titles in 13 seasons with a strong run in the region tournament leading up to the state playoffs. … Walton also notched a victory at the Buckhead Rotary Invitational at the Westminster School with a 3-2 victory over Starr’s Mill. The Peachtree Ridge boys slipped past Christ Church in the event thanks in part to wins by Alex Makarenko and Kevin Lim in singles action and a victory by the No. 2 doubles team. The host Westminster boys lost to Johns Creek at the event Friday with Saturday’s action cancelled due to rain. … The Westminster girls did not take part in the Buckhead Rotary Invitational due to rain, but did beat Greater Atlanta Christian and Lovett earlier in the week, both by 4-1 scores. … The Brookwood boys remain hot after notching a 5-0 victory over Shiloh last Thursday. David Brown, Will McWhirt and Ryan Pridgeon all scored singles victories while the Broncos took the two doubles points with easy victories. Brookwood sits at 5-0 in Region 8-AAAAAA play. The Brookwood girls also swept Shiloh 5-0 last Thursday. …The Mill Creek boys are also undefeated in Gwinnett County’s Region 7-AAAAAA. The Hawks took out North Gwinnett last Thursday to improve to 11-2 overall, 6-0 in region play. Mill Creek swept the three singles matches, led by Quentin Lavender before winning the No. 1 doubles point. … Peachtree Ridge is dominating the Region 7-AAAAAA girls division after taking out Collins Hill 4-1. Abby Owens earned a victory at No. 1 singles. … Finally, Gainesville swept Loganville 5-0, 5-0 as both the boys and the girls teams remained perfect in region play.
