Week off gives defense needed practice time, Devils throw shutout in first game back

A week off may have been just what the football team needed. Head coach Keith Maloof said the team used the off-week to “fix what needed fixing,” and defensive line coach Corey Richardson said his unit focused on technique adjustments. The work seemed to pay off, as D.J. Adams scored twice and the team beat Mill Creek 19-0 last Friday. The Blue Devils face defending Class 5A state runner-up North Gwinnett this Friday. … The softball team improved its Region 7-AAAAA record to 3-1 with a 9-0 win over Shiloh last week. Heidi Shape had two triples and Anisha Dixon also tallied two hits. Pitcher Alexandra Foulke struck out 11 in the winning effort. The team also edged Chattahoochee 4-3, as Jessica Locklear went 2-for-3. … The volleyball team climbed to No. 9 in the recent GACA Coaches poll thanks in part to a pair of sweeps last week. First the team took out Collins Hill, thanks to Rachel Monteagudo’s 34 assists and Briana Jordan’s 13 kills and eight digs. In the second match, Norcross bedeviled North Gwinnett 2-0 (28-26, 30-28). Angelica Wilcox had four aces and Tiffany Clarke chipped in with three blocks.
