Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week: Terry Herrod, Riverdale

Riverdale High School

The Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week program recognizes 12 high school football coaches across the state of Georgia for their hard work and dedication to making a difference in student-athletes’ lives on and off the field over the course of the GHSA season. The fourth winner of the 2017 season is Terry Herrod of Riverdale High School in Riverdale.

Terry was nominated by Jamille Miller-Brown, the principal at Riverdale High School.

When Herrod, who has been at the school since 2013, isn’t focusing on his team on the field, he is assuming numerous duties off the field to help his players.

“Coach Herrod serves as a mentor, teacher, coach and father figure to many of our players,” Miller-Brown said in her nomination. “He played a huge role in the development of our wide receiver Greg White, who lost his father at an early age.”

In a time when White needed him most, Herrod was there.

“His mother works as a truck driver and was often unable to take him to camps and on college visits,” Miller-Brown said. “Coach Herrod made sure that Greg was able to attend camps and games at Wake Forest, Tennessee, UGA, Auburn and Georgia Tech.”

White is currently on a full athletic scholarship at the University of North Florida.

“I am recommending Coach Herrod for this award because he is a tremendous asset to our school,” Miller-Brown said. “In addition to serving as our head football coach, he is our athletic director and teaches five classes of American Government. He is usually the first person to arrive at our school and the last person to leave.”

Dedication to player safety is paramount at Riverdale because of programs implemented by Herrod.

“He is certified in concussion awareness protocol and has worked to ensure our players are properly equipped by securing grants from USA Football and Riddell,” Miller-Brown said.

Herrod is 20-25 in his time at Riverdale, which won its first game this season with a 53-20 victory over Henry County last week.

Each week, one coach will be selected to be the Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Week based on his commitment to his team, community and player safety. The winning coach will receive a $1,000 equipment grant, a commemorative football and tickets to an Atlanta Falcons home game.
