Reclassification for the 2014-2016 school years has fashioned interesting movement across the high school landscape. Dec. 2 is the deadline for teams choosing to play up in classifications and the new regions will be set on Dec. 3.
In Class 6A Mill Creek, at 3,708, is the largest school in the state. There are 67 teams in Georgia’s top class and Lee County at 1,802 is the minimum cutoff. Making the move up into Class 6A from Class 5A are Tucker (1,832) and Pope (1,828), among others. With Tucker moving up, it is thought that current region-rivals Stephenson and M.L. King may opt to play in 6A with Tucker next year before the Dec. 2 deadline.
Coffee was classed down to 5A with an enrollment of 1,775 and Winder-Barrow is the current maximum cutoff of Class 5A at 1,795 students. Seventy-four teams currently sit in Class 5A with Woodland-Henry (1,413) being the smallest. Statesboro (1,491) and Stockbridge (1,446) are a couple of the bigger names that will be forced to move up from Class 4A.
Riverdale (1,393) is the largest Class 4A school and 70 schools encompass the space between Riverdale and Pike County (1,096), the smallest. Woodward Academy (1,103) will be in Class 4A next year along with North Hall (1,103) North Oconee, Cartersville, St. Pius X, White County and Buford. Buford’s enrollment of 1,131 will force the Wolves to move up from their current Class 3A slot.
Dawson County snuck in at Class 3A with 1,087 students and 69 schools sit in the class including current 4A school Cedartown, which has 1,085 students. Glenn Hills has the lowest enrollment in Class 3A at 801 students. Westminster, Kendrick, Jefferson, Washington County and Calhoun are the current Class 2A teams that will be forced to move up into 3A.
Marist is a Class 4A school this season that qualifies as a 2A school for the 2014-16 school years. The War Eagles are typically one of the teams that would choose to play up in classification, as they did last reclassification. Pace Academy, B.E.S.T. Academy, Gordon Lee, Darlington, Seminole County and Holy Innocents’ are a few of the Class A teams that will jump up to Class 2A next year.
Sixty-eight schools fall into Class 2A and there are 102 teams that qualify as Class A.
