GHSA Swim Finals dominated by Walton boys, Lambert girls

Saturday’s GHSA Swimming State Championships at Georgia Tech saw both boys and girls Class AAAAAA defending state champions repeat in dominating fashion.

The Walton boys kept the title in Cobb County, finishing with 310 points to top Alpharetta (303.5), Collins Hill (250.5) and Johns Creek (216). The Lambert girls beat Gwinnett County rival, Brookwood, 433 points to 355 to win their third consecutive state title. Lassiter placed third with 326.5 points and Walton fourth with 271.

A part of Lambert’s domination included two relay titles, one in the 200-yard medley behind the  foursome of Caroline Aikins, Ashley Mallon, Jane Johnson and Katherine Aikins (1:44.38). They also took the 200 freestyle relay with Lilia Smith, Emma Fish and the Aikins sister (1:35.90). The Woodstock girls were led by junior Lauren Case, who won two individual state titles in the 200 freestyle (1:45.96) and 100 butterfly (53.13). Brookwood took home three individual state titles with Devan Sweeney in the 200 individual medley (2:02.38), Maddy Cohen in the 100  freestyle (50.93) and Anna Jahns in the 500 freestyle (4:52.88). The quartet of Jahns, Sweeney, Megan Hansen and Cohen rapped up the state meet placing first in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:27.55 to beat Walton (3:29.89) and Lassiter (3:30.54).

For the boys, University of Alabama signee Knox Auerbach of Northview was awarded two individual state titles in the 100 and 200 freestyle (44.41 and 1:37.00 respectively). He was also a part of the 200 freestyle relay team, which included Brady Sam, Joonas Koski and brother Cade Auerbach (1:24.32). Also, Auerbach’s 400 freestyle relay tied Alpharetta’s relay squad tied for first with a time of 3:04.33. Cody Bekemeyer, who will swim for the University of South Carolina, won the 500 freestyle in 4:23.28, which was 11 seconds faster than runner-up, Johns Creek Col Willamson (4:34.15). Walton’s points were spread out among many events and David Dingess brought home gold in the 100 butterfly (49.19) and also won the 200 medley relay.

In the Class AAAAAA diving competition, Etowah’s Madison DuVall, who will dive at University of Georgia, won her second state title racking up 433.20 points to top runner-up Walton’s Peri Charapich (404.95), Colquitt County’s Kellian Howell (404.85) and Lassiter’s Madelin Hester (384.80). On the boys’ side, freshman Park Hardigree of Colquitt County upset last year’s diving state champion Norcross’ Griffin Ramsey, 521 to 442.70, followed by Nick Goh of Pope (431.95) and Walton’s Kyle Hudon (383.70).

Class A-AAAAA: In the girls’ diving championships, Wesleyan sophomore Abby Gardner defended her state title, winning the one-meter dive for the second straight year with a score of 474.40 with Marist’s Ellie Crump placing second (453.45) followed by Greenbrier’s Ayanna Woods (444.15) and Marist’s Sarah Jacobson (420.05). On the boys’ side, Pace’s Harrison Moncino, who will be diving for Miami of Ohio, also won back-to-back titles with 578.60 points to top runner-up Kell’s Anthony Musciano (482.60). Grant Summers of St. Pius finished third (463) and fourth was Oconee’s Britt Edelen (442.20).

In the swimming championships, the Westminster boys won state for the first time since 2008, at that time having won six straight championships. The Wildcats edged runner-up Marist 309.0 to 293.5, followed by Chamblee-Charter (269.0) and Evans (206). The Marist girls won their first title since 2011, accumulating 264 points to beat St. Pius (202.5), Oconee County (193) and Dunwoody (192).

The day was highlighted by Colin Monaghan of Gainesville, who will swim at the University of Georgia and broke the state record in the 100 breastroke with a time of 55.03 seconds. Dalton High School stand out Ethan Young broke his own 2014 state record in the 100 backstroke at 47.47. He also tied for first with Marist’s Christian Lory in the 100 butterfly at 48.92. Future University of Tennessee swimmer Ty Powers of North Hall, the brother of state record holder Paul Powers in the 50 and 100 freestyle, placed first in the 50-yard freestyle at 20.47, just shy of the record.

The Marist boys’ quartet of Christian Lorys, Joe Dillard. Nathan Maulding and Matthew and Haertel won the 200 medley relay at 1:35.16, topping runner-up Westminster’s relay squad time of 1:35.86. Coming into the state meet as the favorite after winning the 200 medley relay at the Metro Invitational last month, the Marist foursome of Anne Locker, Hannah Lagod, Elizabeth Bailey and Tori Lauterbach dominated the event at 1:47.12.

Westminster’s Derek Cox won the 200 individual medley and Riverwood’s Lila Claire Best took the 200 freestyle.  Donna Blaum of Starr’s Mill won both the 50 freestyle (23.36) and 100 butterfly (55.50) while Da Della Torre of Oconee County got first in both the 100 breastroke (1:02.94) and 200 IM (2:01.07).
