Hillgrove D-line coach named Campbell’s new head coach

Campbell brought in Ryan Brady on Friday to be the Spartans new head football coach. Brady comes from Hillgrove where he served as defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator the past three seasons. Brady’s resume includes defensive coordinator stints at Cass and Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) as well as an assistant coaching job at Harborfields (N.Y.), his alma mater.

According to the Marietta Daily Journal, Campbell Athletic Director Rudy Deveaux revealed that the school received 31 applications and the selection committee eventually narrowed the candidates down to six finalists before the decision was made.

The Spartans went 4-6 last season under Harris Rainbow, who was fired despite the team’s improvement from a 1-9 before Rainbow arrived in 2011. Campbell was housed in a region that put McEachern and Hillgrove in the state semifinals in 2013 and went 2-6 against the stiff competition. Brady will lead the Spartans into a new region this upcoming season with Douglas County, East Coweta, Langston Hughes, Newnan, Pebblebrook, South Cobb and Westlake. This region appears more favorable as Langston Hughes was the only team to make it out of the first round of the playoffs in 2013. While at Hillgrove, Brady coached in my opinion one of the best defensive fronts in the state, led by N.C. State-signee Bradley Chubb.

Campbell has been known to make great hires when it comes to bringing in a first-time head coach. Kyle Hockman began his head coaching career at Campbell in 2006 before taking over the McEachern program two successful seasons later. Hillgrove’s Phillip Ironside also made his debut at Campbell and coached the Spartans from 2002-2005 before taking over the Hawks program.
