Parkview’s title defense continues

The GHSA Class AA-AAAAAA baseball quarterfinals begin tonight with several high-profile matchups that should make baseball enthusiasts smile with delight. Two-time defending Class AAAAA champion Parkview will continue its goal of winning the state’s first-ever Class AAAAAA title when the Panthers welcome Colquitt County to Lilburn. Parkview had to hold off a pesky Etowah squad in Round 1 before sweeping Peachtree Ridge in the second round. Colquitt County will likely not show much aversion to going on the road after pulling out a pair of one-run victories at Luella last week. … Milton had a quick turnaround from its first-round series win over Brookwood by clocking Lambert 2-0. East Coweta awaits in the quarterfinals. … Walton rallied twice to take out Norcross and has one of the state’s best in Stephen Wrenn. Henry Rowling can also provide power for the Raiders. Tift County loves the long ball and Briggs Benson knocked a pair of home runs in Tift County’s Game 3 win over Newnan. … Roswell has been an underdog all postseason long, beating Grayson on the road before taking out Mill Creek on the road. The Hornets now will travel to Valdosta to face Lowndes. … The Gainesville Red Elephants have been blasting the competition all postseason long, but a well-traveled Whitewater team likely won’t care about having to hit the road once again. The onus will be on Whitewater to try and dent the seemingly untouchable Gettys brothers, Michael and Jonathan. The brothers each pitched a shutout in the second round win over Creekview. … Pope faced one of the nation’s best players in Winder-Barrow’s Travis Demeritte in the second round and got the better of him. Now the Greyhounds will host Evans in the quarterfinals. … The defending Class AAAA champions Loganville will hit the road to face Starr’s Mill. Clint Frazier is a threat to go deep every time up to the plate. … Redan is led by Wesley Jones, who is one of the state’s top shortstop prospects. Jones and Trega Williams each came up big to help Redan bump off the three-time defending champion Columbus Blue Devils. The Raiders will travel to Locust Grove in the AAAA quarterfinals. … Veterans has given up just two runs in four games to reach the quarters. Troup has swept both its series thus far but allowed 13 runs thus far. … Marist, which faces South Effingham, has posted three shutouts so far this postseason while Crisp County has averaged 11 runs per game through the first two rounds. … Cartersville has reached the Class AAA playoffs, but not without a struggle. After sweeping Morgan County, Cartersville was taken to a Game 3 by Woodward Academy and managed to escape at home with a 4-3 victory. Region 3 champion Dodge County will welcome in Cartersville this afternoon. … North Hall has reached the quarterfinals for the first time in the program’s history and will travel to 2012 Class AA finalist Pierce County. … Chapel Hill hosts Blessed Trinity in the other Class AAA quarterfinal series. … In Class AA, Lovett will head to Westside-Augusta and something will have to give in this series. Both teams have looked strong thus far in the postseason, with Lovett sweeping Bremen on the road in the second round. … Wesleyan will head to Benedictine after winning in the second round in three against Jefferson. Benedictince cruised to a 16-3 win against Thomasville in Game 3 of their series. … Pepperell will host Jeff Davis in their Class AA quarterfinal series after Pepperell swept Union County and Jeff Davis went on the road for a sweep of Berrien last week. … Finally, Westminster has hardly been challenged in four games this postseason and will host Toombs County. The Toombs County offense is capable of putting up huge numbers, so the Westminster defense will have to keep mistakes to a minimum.
