Softball and Volleyball scores from Tuesday

Region tournaments brought focus to the end of the softball season on Tuesday as teams jockey for playoff positions in the GHSA State Fast Pitch Softball Playoffs, which begin play on Oct. 8-9. Winners in the playoff brackets will funnel to the 8-team State Fast Pitch Softball Tournament bracket, which begins play for all classes on Oct. 24.

In a matchup between the two highest-ranked programs in Class AAAAAA, No. 1 Houston County split games with No. 2 Lee County in the 1-AAAAAA championship series. Houston County won the first game 4-3 and Lee County forced a decisive third game with a 14-4 victory in game two.

In game one, the top-ranked Bears took a 4-1 lead after two innings and held on for the victory. Lee County climbed back into the game with a run in the bottom of the second inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning but fell short. Houston County junior Makayla Krepps led with two RBIs and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Junior Kendall Huelsman was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Junior Alice Thomas scored twice, juniors Krepps and Bobbi Poff each scored once. Senior Rylee Lamb pitched a complete game and allowed four hits. She faced 31 batters and struck out six. In the second game, Lee County ended it in six innings and took a 14-4 victory after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Trojans built the lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning after trailing the Bears 3-0. It then held Houston County scoreless in the third and fourth innings while adding five more runs. Each team added a run in the fifth inning before Lee took control in the sixth inning. Houston County will travel to Lee County for the deciding third game on Wednesday.

In the 6-AAA championship series, No. 1 Ringgold beat No. 4 Calhoun in two games and ended the Yellow Jackets region title streak at seven. The Tigers won the first game 4-2 and the second game 3-1 to capture the title. Ringgold won the first game in walk-off fashion with a 2-run home run from Amber Gainer in the ninth inning to take a 4-2 victory. Calhoun took a 2-0 lead-off a home run by junior Hannah Mashburn in the top of the second inning. Ringgold responded with a solo leadoff home run by Ava Raby in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers tied the game with another solo home run, this time by Riley Nayadley in the bottom of the third inning and then the teams traded defensive blows before Gainer’s game-winning home run. She was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Nayadley was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Raby was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kaylee Phillips pitched a complete game for Ringgold. She allowed 10 hits, faced 40 batters and struck out four. In the second game, Ringgold took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jade Gainer. Calhoun tied it with an RBI-single from Jane Mashburn which scored Espee Reyes. In the top of the sixth inning, Ringgold took a 2-1 lead with an RBI-single from Nayadley and then gained a 2-run lead after a sac fly by Shelby Cole which put the game out of reach.

On the volleyball court, Athens Academy moved to 34-5 on the season and 4-0 in the area with a closely contested 2-0 victory over Jackson County on Tuesday. The Spartans won the first set 25-23 and the second set 25-22. Freshman Olivia Nealy led with nine kills, nine digs, 12 receptions, and 23 attack attempts. Junior Ali Rumpel added 13 digs, 10 attack attempts, nine receptions and four kills. Freshman Mara Thomas gained five points with 10 serves and two aces. She had 16 assists and eight digs.
