Wednesday football and volleyball second-round final scores

The second-round of the GHSA Volleyball State Championship continued Wednesday night with the remaining teams vying for a berth in the quarterfinals.

In Class AAAAAA, Allatoona defeated Gainesville in three-straight sets to take the match. Allatoona won the first set 25-17, the second set 25-13 and the final set 25-15 to advance to face Richmond Hill in the quarterfinals. Lakeside-Evans swept Valdosta to earn a quarterfinal berth against Creekview. Lakeside won the first set 25-14, the second set 25-16 and held on for a 25-23 victory in the third set to win the match. Greenbrier only needed three sets to punch its ticket to the quarterfinals. The Lady Wolfpack defeated Drew 25-19 in the first set, 25-16 in the second set and 25-12 in the third set. Greenbrier will face Alpharetta, which swept Winder-Barrow on Wednesday, in the Elite 8. Glynn Academy advanced past Houston County 3-1 to earn a quarterfinal berth against Pope. Glynn won the first set 25-18 but lost the second set 25-22. The Lady Terrors bounced back and won the third set 25-16 and the fourth set 25-19 to win.

In Class AAAA, Columbus swept Cross Creek in three sets to advance to face Northwest Whitfield in the quarterfinals. Columbus was not challenged in the second-round match, defeating Cross Creek 25-4, 25-12 and 25-5. Cartersville advanced to the AAAA quarterfinals for the second-straight season following its 3-1 victory over LaFayette. The Lady Canes won the first set 25-21, before losing the second set 25-22. Cartersville bounced back with back-to-back victories (25-23, 25-18) to secure the victory.

In Class AA-A Public, Coosa swept Oglethorpe County to earn a quarterfinal berth against Thomasville. Coosa won the first set 25-4, the second set 25-8 and the third set 25-5 to overpower Oglethorpe. Harlem advanced to a quarterfinal match against Rabun County following its 3-0 sweep of Temple. The Lady Bulldogs won the first set 25-10, the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-17.

In football action, Cairo scored in all facets of the game to outclass Shaw 45-14 in a game which featured a several ejections, a slew of unsportsmanlike penalties throughout and a running clock in the fourth quarter. The game, which secured the 1-AAAA region championship for Cairo, shifted into Cairo’s favor early as it built a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and a 31-0 lead at the half.

Cairo scored first on a 9-yard run by Tay Solomon with 4:13 left in the first quarter, a play that was set up by a screen pass from Ronnie Baker to Nick Gosier. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Baker found Cameron Goosby on a 60-yard touchdown pass and Noah Jones’ PAT put the Syrupmakers up 14-0. Jones’ 20-yard field goal with 9:00 left in the first half gave Cairo a 17-0 lead. Cairo’s defense earned the next score on a blocked punt which was returned by Cam Jones for a 30-yard touchdown to put Cairo up 24-0 following Jones’ PAT. The Syrupmaker special teams wasn’t left out of the onslaught as Gosier broke free on a punt return and rushed 74 yards for the score to make it a 31-0 game at the half. Solomon found the endzone again on a 26-yard rush with nine minutes left in the third quarter to push the lead to 38-0. Shaw cut into the lead on a 38-yard rushing touchdown with a minute left in the third quarter 38-7 before Solomon scored again on a short dive with less than a minute remaining to make it a 45-7 game. Shaw added a touchdown on a 45-yard pass to bring the game to its final tally.
